Background & Personal Life
Daniel Wu’s parents were from China and immigrated to the US before he or his sisters were born. His father was an engineer who left China after the communist revolution and met his mother in New York where she was a student. They married and settled down in California where Daniel and his two elder sisters were born.
After watching the Jet Li movie “The Shaolin Temple” at the age of 11, Daniel started studying wushu and adopted Jackie Chan as his role model. He founded a wushu club at the University of Oregon in 1994 when he studied architecture there and continues to practice wushu both on and off the screen. After graduation from university in 1997, Daniel travelled to Hong Kong to witness the hand over of Hong Kong to China and started modelling which led four months later to his first screen appearance.
Daniel Wu has dated fellow American Chinese actress Maggie Q and married model Lisa S in South Africa in 2010. He met Lisa S on the set of the movie Rob-B-Hood in 2006 that she also starred in.
Acting Career
Daniel’s break into acting came when director Yonfan saw his picture in an advertisement on the MTR and offered him a role in his upcoming movie “Bishonen” (1998). After the completion of Bishonen, he was offered and received roles in a number of successful films such as “Young and Dangerous” and “The Prequel”. His break through movie that confirmed his status as a Chinese movie star was the 1999 movie “Gen-X Cops”.
Since 1999 Daniel Wu has established himself as one of China’s main actors and starred in a number of box offices successes along side screen legends such as Jackie Chan starred in a number of major films. He received strong media criticism for his role in sex scenes in the movie “Cop on a Mission” (2001) but was vindicated when the recognition he received by directors allowed him to his future roles.
