Journey West is an ancient Chinese classic about the journey of a monk and his three animal spirit disciples to the west. The movie “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” is a prequel to that classic and introduces the monk Xuan Zang who is still a novice far from enlightenment living in a small rural fishing village. The village is plagued by a demon from the sea who the villagers want to kill but Xuan Zang believes evil spirit can be reformed. While on a mission to reform all he evil spirits he comes across, Xuan Zang is saved by a female demon hunter Gu Jing who falls in love with him. Xuan Zang how ever rejects her claiming that physical love is the lesser love and he is devoted to the greater spiritual love.
Gu Jing continues to chase Xuan Zang and even takes classes on how to be sexy in attempt to seduce him. As the one sided courtship continues the Monkey King Sun Wukong and other characters are introduced to the movie with ironic and humorous twists characteristic of Stephen Chow.
