Acting Career
Like many other famous Hong Kong actors such as Tony Leung, Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, Lau Ching-wan began his acting career at Hong Kong’s commercial television station TVB. He started acting classes with TVB in 1983 and had his first role the following year in the TV series “Draw out the Rainbow”. Lau then appeared in “Police Cadet 84” with fellow star Tony Leung Chiu-Wai which exposed him to Hong Kong audiences and established his career as an actor.
Despite his earlier TV successes, Lau’s dark skin and lack of matinee idol looks that other stars Chinese movie stars such as Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro shared meant he initially struggled to find movie roles. It was not until he starred in the extremely popular TV series “The Greed of Men” (1992) that he made the successful transition from TV to the large screen.
Since his screen debut in 1986 in the movie “Silent Love” he has starred in a number of hit movies such as Full Alert (1997), The Longest Nite (1998) and Mad Detective (2007). The movies and roles Lau has starred in range from gritty police dramas to comedies and romances. Lau’s outstanding successes in these widely varied roles has made him one of Hong Kong and China’s most versatile actors.
