Liu Yifei is the only child born to father An Shaokang who was a secretary to the Chinese embassy in France and a university professor and mother Liu Xiaoli who was a dancer and stage performer. Her parents divorced when she was 7, leaving her in her mothers care. She moved to the US when she was 10 with her mother, obtained American citizen ship and returned to China in 2002 to pursue a career in acting and modelling.
Liu’s career in entertainment began at the age of 7 when she took up modelling and started training in singing, dancing and playing the piano. Soon after returning to China from the US, Liu Yifei was accepted into the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy at the age of 15 and graduated in 2006.
She started to receive offers to perform in a number of Chinese TV series soon after her admittance into the institute and had her first role in 2002 in the TV series “The Story of a Noble Family”. The second role in the 2003 TV series “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils” launched her to fame and she became very popular with Chinese audiences. Her first big screen role in the 2003 movie “Love of May” with May Day, a well known Taiwanese rock band further increased her popularity and established her career as a prominent actress.
Liy Yifei as since starred in a number of hit Chinese TV series such as the 2005 “The Legend of the Sword and Fairy” and 2006 “The Return of the Condor Heroes”. Her movie successes include the US 2008 movie “The Forbidden Kingdom” with Jackie Chan and Jet Li and the 2012 Chinese movie “The Four” with Hong Kong screen legend Anthony Wong.
Though not as prominent as her TV and movie successes, Liy Yifei is also a popular singer in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. She began singing in 2005 after receiving a contract with Sony and has released albums in Japan and in China and Hong Kong.
