Tony Leung Chiu-Wai has appeared in multiple hit movies and is one of the biggest stars in Chinese cinema today. Coming from an impoverished back ground, Tony started his career in TV series in 1982 with Hong Kong’s TVB and started doing recognized movie roles in 1989.

Background & Personal Life
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai’s parents divorced when he was 8 due to constant arguments and his father’s gambling problem and he and his younger sister were brought up single handed by his mother. After his parent’s separation, Tony became withdrawn, isolated and unable to easily express his emotions. A background that Tony said made him ideally suited for acting.
Forced out of school at the age of 15 because of tuition costs, Tony did a number of odd jobs such as working as a runner for his uncle’s grocery store and as a show room salesman in a shopping center. This stage of his life changed when he met the Hong Kong’s famous actor and comedy star Stephen Chow who’s influence led him into an acting career.
His first public relationship was with Margie Tsang who he met in 1983. From 1983 to 1989 they broke off and reunited three times and finally called of the relationship When Tony started dating his future wife Carina Lau in 1989. Tony first met his wife in 1984 because she was the friend of Margie Tsang, started dating her in 1989 and they eventually marred in Bhutan in 2008.
Acting Career
Like many famous actors before him such as Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai started his acting career with Hong Kong’s television channel TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited). He passed his training course in 1982 and due to his boyish looks, was cast as the host of a children’s program “430 Space Shuttle”. During his time in TVB, most of his roles were comedy and he developed name for himself as a comic actor. He starred in a number of successful TV series such as “Police Cadet 84” (1984) with fellow star Maggie Cheung.
His first movie that gained exposure was the 1989 film “A City of Sadness”. His film break through came in 1992 when he starred with Chow yun-fat in the John Woo action film “Hard Boiled”. Since “Hard Boiled” Tony has gone on to star in a string of highly successful movies such as “Chungking Express” (1994), “Hero” (2002), “Infernal Affairs” (2002) and “Red Cliff” (2008).
Due to the quality, depth and versatility of his acting, Tony is regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation and has the admiration of both Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt. Tony also speaks fluent English and Spanish and can speak Mandarin and some Japanese. Language skills that have helped him star in Chinese movies such as Hero and were used in other films such as Tokyo Raiders where he spoke Japanese.
